We've asked the #emailgeeks community to contribute top tips they've received for being a successful email marketer.

'Always bring the host of the party a small gift'. 'Look left and right before crossing the road'. 'Stop licking that plug socket'. These nuggets of advice were handed to me at a young age and have stuck with me ever since. And following them clearly works, as I've not yet been run over and I get invited to lots of parties. Although I wish I could say the same for the plug socket...

We encounter those who hand down helpful hints and tips regularly throughout our working careers, but there is always one gem of wisdom that shines brighter than the rest. And since collaborating is key to success, and sharing is caring, we asked our friends in the #emailgeeks community to pass on any helpful top tips that have helped them progress in email marketing.

Successful email marketing should be synonymous with relationship building". While this isn't exclusive to email it has fundamentally shaped how I approach strategy and also how I explain effective marketing communications to others. If you aren't building a relationship with your subscribers or customers, then you can't expect them to be around long term.

Don't talk about your company's products. Find how they solve your customers' problems and build content around that.

Listen first. People don't care what you have to say—they care how you're going to help. If what you're saying doesn't solve their problems, it's irrelevant. When you take the time to stop talking long enough to listen, it's easy to hear what problems actually need solving. And when you can solve people's problems, you don't have to shout for them to listen.

I've always been told to speak to people on their level, never down or up at them. And that applies to creating marketing messaging too. Audiences engage much more actively with something that, tone-wise, relates to them, feels equal to them and that they can understand. Dumbing-down or being high-minded can leave you missing the mark!

Marketing is made up of so many different areas, but it's easy to focus all of your energy into one area that you are naturally good at, or enjoy. This neglects all the other areas, so try to spread out your resources and nurture everything in the process. The sum of all parts is always greater than one.
